For college students, between papers, study groups, and finals, pretty much all of our time is dedicated to school. When we do get a free moment, it’s not enough time to get ourselves to a gym. Luckily, there are a few techniques you can do in the privacy of your dorm room or apartment that will get you some kind of workout benefit without having to dedicate a lot of time going to a gym.

1. Weights

Go to the nearest sports store or even Target or Walmart and pick up a few free weights. If you haven’t been a regular weight lifter, you may want to start out with light weights. Use the weights two or three times a day and do 3 sets of 10. You can even do it while studying or watching TV! It doesn’t take very long and you’ll see results fairly quickly.

2. Resistance Bands

You can do lunges, plieés, or any other type of exercise you can think of with resistance bands, which improve strength and balance. Pick one up at Target from anywhere between $10-$20 and look up some workouts on YouTube.

3. Video Workouts

Google is your best friend when it comes to dance routines, pilatés stretches, or anything else that will get your body up and moving. Even just turning on the stereo for 15 minutes and dancing your heart out will give you a nice workout.

4. Use Your Furniture

Sit on the edge of your bed with your hands on the bed at your hips. Scoot your bottom off the bed and bend your elbows to lower your body a few inches. You can also use your desk to do standing push-ups. Put your hands on the edge of the desk about shoulder-width apart. Bending your elbows, lower your upper body down until you’re about six inches from the desk. Push back up. Do 3 sets of 10 for both. Get creative for other workouts!

When it comes to working out, find something that is fun so getting a workout in is not a chore or something you dread. See if your roommate will do the workouts with you! You can motivate each other and reward yourselves at the end of each week for keeping to your routine.

Alternative Workouts: No Gym Required

One of the best things about being a student in college is getting free access to a recreation center with all of the treadmills, ellipticals, but what about when you go home for the summer and you can no longer access the gym? Not to worry! There are a ton of ways to get a great workout without ever setting foot in a gym.

1. Ultimate Frisbee

Get your friends together for a giant game of Ultimate Frisbee or Capture the Flag. It’s amazing how much fun doing sprint intervals can be when you have a flag in your hand and a bunch of people chasing you.

2. Hiking

There is a mountain, or at least a large hill, in every town. Climb it! Extra points for jogging at least part of it and snapping an Instagram of the view from the top (you know you’re going to).

3. Inspiration

Look up sample workouts on Pinterest. Not only does Pinterest have inspiring workout quotes and pictures of ripped fitness models to get you motivated, it has an unlimited supply of sample workouts. Want to tone those abs? There’s probably a thousand ways on Pinterest. Want to target those inner thighs? Same deal. Be careful, though, because Pinterest also has food ideas that can undo that workout in a heartbeat (case in point, I just re-pinned a recipe for “S’mores Cookie Brownie Bites. Goodbye, abs).

4. Jogging Date

Have a jogging catch-up date with a friend. I hate having sit-down conversations with people, so I always suggest jogging instead of coffee. Not only do you get to catch up with a friend, your endorphins make small talk so much easier. And it is completely normal to have awkward pauses while you both huff and puff up a hill.

5. Biking

I always forget how much I love biking until I actually do it, then I start pedaling and I get flashbacks to kindergarten and I fall in love all over again! Plus, riding your bike to work or the store is a great way to burn those extra calories (and save on gas).

6. Swimming

Find a pool or lake. Whether you do lap swimming or play Marco Polo, it’s a great place to get a great workout and a tan.
