Amidst the romance, celebratory pink and purple hearts, and love stuff – the best part of Valentine’s Day is probably the desserts. Rich chocolate cakes drizzled with yummy sauces, crunchy cookies with colorful frosting, and lots and lots of sprinkles! If you’re planning on a sweet (literally) Valentine’s Day, there are plenty of super easy desserts that can be quickly pulled together if you’re short on time this coming Love Day.

Check out these mouth-watering treats for some baking inspiration:

1. Rice Krispies Hearts

The age-old favorite hasn’t lost its appeal! Combine butter, marshmallows, and Rice Krispies together to make the typical Rice Krispies Treat. For different colored treats, have a separate bowl for each color to mix ingredients in. You can then use your favorite cookie cutters (I suggest hearts or letters to spell out a sweet message) to add some flair. Give them to your special someone, your best friends, or enjoy them yourself!

2. Muddy Buddies

Who doesn’t love this guilty pleasure?! It might be directed more towards the kids, but who are we kidding: this treat knows no age limit. Combine Chex rice cereal, confectioner sugar, shortening, sprinkles, and pink candies to make yet another tasty treat made of cereal.

3. Classic Cherry Bread

If you like Maraschino cherries as much as I do, you’ll love this recipe for cherry bread. Combine things you probably already have in your kitchen (sugar, flour, salt, eggs, etc.) along with one 10-oz. jar of maraschino cherries. Bake and then drizzle it with a cream cheese icing. I think I know what I’ll be making for Valentine’s Day!

4. White Chocolate Popcorn

If you “heart” popcorn more than any other snack, this recipe is for you. Melt 12 ounces of white chocolate in a double boiler (or microwave) and then drizzle it over your popped popcorn. Use a spoon to toss it and then spread it out on a baking sheet. Sprinkle with salt, your favorite sprinkles (hopefully pink and red), and feel free to add some conversation hearts for cuteness! Once it’s all cooled, start snacking!

5. Fruit Roll-Up Fortune Cookies

We all remember Fruit Roll-Ups as the most coveted snack at the lunch table when we were kids. Some of our parents were nice and stuck one in there for our mid-day treat, while others had to beg and plead with their parents to buy them. Turns out, they’re perfect material for making fortune cookies. Buy a box of fruit roll-ups (one roll-up equals one cookie), use a circle cookie cutter, and fold! Don’t forget to tuck in sweet “fortune” messages! Super easy, and super sweet!

Whatever you make, you can’t go overboard with red and pink colors, a smooth frosting, or anything classic. Other hits include chocolate-covered strawberries, pink and white M&M cookies, or the infamous heart cake topped with your favorite frosting.

Love is in the air! And what better way to celebrate Valentine’s Day than by watching movies about love? There are tons of romantic movies out there, which may make it that much harder to decide on the perfect one for you and your valentine to cuddle up to this Valentine’s Day, so I have compiled a movie list of some of my favorites to help you out.

1. The Notebook

This movie is the ultimate romantic movie of our time! You can’t go wrong with the love story of a poor young man and a rich young girl who are forced to separate, but whose love never wavers. Warning: be prepared to shed many tears if you haven’t already seen this movie.

2. Casablanca

If you and your valentine are more into classics, this is the movie for you. This movie is a romantic drama film set during World War II. The story is about the love of the protagonist, Rick, and his lost love, Ilsa, who is in town with her husband. But the story is also of the drama that surrounds their love at this time and place in history as Ilsa must escape the country with her husband.

3. Love Actually

For a more lighthearted and funny romantic film, check out this movie. Although it is based around the holiday season, it’s still absolutely acceptable to watch in February (and all year round)! It follows the love stories of a variety of people of different ages and at different levels of love. Ranging from a young boy in love with his classmate who he has never spoken to, to a newly married couple, to a woman who suspects her husband is cheating on her – this movie has it all.

4. Dirty Dancing

One of my favorites, this movie tells the story of a young girl who is starting to realize the world isn’t as black and white as she had believed it to be. She discovers a different life style when she goes away on vacation with her family and meets Johnny, a “bad boy” dancer played by Patrick Swayze. Not only is the story great, but the soundtrack to this film is also quite amazing.

5. 50 Shades of Grey

For those of you who want to actually go to the movies this Valentine’s Day, this new movie opens on February 14th. Based on the very popular novel by E.L. James, this much-anticipated film has created a lot of buzz.

Any of these five films are a great choice for this Valentine’s Day. If you choose any of the five movies above, it’ll surely make your day more romantic.

Just because Valentine’s Day is over doesn’t mean you can’t celebrate love! Sometimes it’s better to celebrate after Valentine’s Day because then there are less crowds and things like that big box of chocolate and cute teddy bear start to go on sale! Even if you already celebrated V-Day or just want to take a break from studying, here are a mix of new romance and comedy movies to go check out in the spirit of love!

A romantic comedy starring Zac Efron as one part of a trio of best friends who make a pact to maintain single status after one of them ends up heartbroken by a recent breakup.

2. Labor Day

Adele (Kate Winslet) is a struggling single mother to her thirteen year old son, Henry. On a back-to-school shopping trip, the two bump into escaped convict Frank Chambers (Josh Brolin), who convinces them to take him in. Romance can only follow, right?

3. About Last Night

A “modern reimagining” of the 1986 classic rom-com. This version follows the new love for two couples as they progress in their relationships, starring Kevin Hart, Regina Hall, and Michael Ealy.

4. Endless Love

Jade Butterfield (Gabriella Wilde) is the pretty and privileged teen who falls for David Elliot (Alex Pettyfer), a troubled working-class boy, after high school graduation. Both the teen’s parents disapprove of their love, which only makes them want to pursue it more.

So get going to the movies with that special someone or even with some friends!

7 Reasons Why Cats Are The Best Valentines

Who says you need a date this Valentine’s Day? The best date you could have is your cat!

No, seriously! Here’s why:

1. They’re Soft

Sure, boyfriends can grow beards. But those are scratchy. Cats are much softer and less apt to complain about hands on their face.

2. You Don’t Have To Share Your Chocolate

No need to grudgingly offer a spoon of Ben & Jerry’s Half Baked to the significant other. You can eat the whole carton by yourself (without another person there to judge you). And your cat won’t say one word.

3. They Won’t Get Jealous

They won’t mind if you want to go out with your friends on Valentine’s Day. In fact, they’ll probably enjoy the chance to catch up on their kitty beauty sleep.

4. There’s No Awkward Moment

At the end of the night, you won’t have to decide who pays the bill. Um, but don’t bring your cat to a restaurant… that could get really awkward, really fast.

5. You Can Stay In

In fact, you don’t have to go out at all. Cats are more than fine staying at home and watching movies all night.

6. No Dressing Up

They don’t care what you look like. Sure, every well-meaning boyfriend tells us we look better in “sweat pants, chillin’ with no makeup on” (or maybe that’s just Drake), but cats? They really don’t care.

7. Tons Of Cuddles

They are always there to cuddle at the end of the day and offer a supportive purr to all of your troubles.

So… what’s not to love? Cuddle up to your cat this Valentine’s Day. They are much better dates.

Dogs will suffice too! 😉

Think you have to be rich to celebrate Valentine’s Day? Wrong. Valentine’s Day, like other holidays, doesn’t have to break the bank. No matter what your budget is, there are always ways to celebrate. The big day is only one week away, so if you don’t have something planned, I have a few inexpensive suggestions for you.

1. Cook Dinner

You can surprise him/her with a homemade dinner, or make it a duo activity and pick out your meal together, go shopping to get the ingredients, and spend some kitchen time together while your favorite music plays in the background. Or, maybe one of you will focus on the meal while the other focuses on the dessert. Don’t forget to light the candles for the mood!

2. Have A Picnic

You can still have a picnic even if it’s cold outside. Just bundle up with some scarves and mittens, bring a cozy blanket, and find a spot in a park or beside a lake. Snack on fruit, cheese, crackers, and of course, chocolate. When it gets too cold for comfort, head back home and warm up inside with some cocoa!

3. Enjoy The Waves

Pick up some dessert and enjoy it by the beach as the waves crash in. Be sure to get there before sunset for a romantic view. End it with a stroll in the sand.

4. Rent A Hot Tub

In some towns, you can rent a private hot tub by the hour for pretty affordable prices. Grab your bathing suits and some towels and spend the night relaxing in hot water. Afterward, grab drinks or a late dinner.

5. Go Out

Downtown or near campus there are always places with fun events like dancing, karaoke, ice-skating or other holiday-themed events. Check your local paper or Craigslist – you’re bound to find something!

6. Try Something New

Get takeout at that new restaurant you always drive or walk by, rent a couple new movies, take it all back to your place and veg out. Afterward, venture out for dessert or create something on your own with what you already have in the cupboards. Anything new is bound to be exciting and make for a memorable night.

Just remember to enjoy the day and the rest will come naturally. Get creative and have fun! What are some Valentine’s Day date ideas you have? Leave them in the comments below!
