If you’re like the vast majority of people who make New Year’s resolutions, you probably don’t follow through with them very often; or at least for more than a few months. I am certainly guilty of this and gave up making resolutions all together. Then I started making SMART goals that have given me a specific clear vision of what I want to accomplish and how I will do it.

“SMART” is an acronym for “specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound” requirements that can help you format a realistic goal:

1. Specific Goals

There are five questions you must ask yourself to create a specific goal. You need to ask what your goal is and why you are making this goal; what is it you want to achieve? Who else is involved that contributes to the problem or to the solution? Where and when specifically will this goal be accomplished? Is anything holding you back from achieving this? What can help you achieve it?

2. Measurable Goals

Use quantitative amounts. Rather than saying, “I want to lose weight,” identify an exact number you want to lose and you can even go further by identifying the specific amount of time you want to use to accomplish that goal. For example, “I want to lose 10 pounds by 3 months.”

3. Attainable Goals

Set a realistic goal and figure out how to reach it. If you want to “be able to bench press 350lbs in 2 weeks,” but you currently only bench 150 and you only workout once in a blue moon, that is not a realistic goal to have. Make sure you are capable to complete the goal you set and get a second opinion on it from someone who is able to give constructive criticism.

4. Relevant Goals

Have a goal that actually matters. Is this goal worth your time and effort? Will it improve your life? Will others support or benefit from this goal? The more relevant this goal is to your life, the more motivation you will have to accomplish it.

5. Time-Bound Goals

Make a time limit for your goal like a deadline for an essay. This can help you track your progress and make it easier to take advantage of your down time. Instead of sitting on the couch watching TV, you’ll more likely be working towards your goal.

The beauty of the “SMART” criteria is that it is universally applicable to any goal. No matter what your resolution is, shape it around SMART to help you achieve it.

Don’t Break It: Sticking To Your Resolutions

Even if they don’t admit it, everyone has some sort of New Year’s resolution! Every year is a fresh start and the idea of a life refresh button is something everyone is happy about. The biggest issue with resolutions is sticking to them! Here are a few tips that I used last year for my resolution and I actually accomplished my goal! My goal was to lose 30 pounds, and I did that plus a little more by following these tips! These may not work for everyone, but it’s a good place to start!

1. Tell People About Your Goal

Accountability is something that almost always works, because we don’t want others to know if we fail! The more people that know about your goal, the better. I was embarrassed about admitting I needed to lose weight, but I posted it on Facebook anyway because that was a solid 1,000+ people that would be aware of what my goal was for the year. Not to mention the love and support I got from everyone throughout my weight loss made me feel amazing!

2. Self- Motivation Cards & Posters

This isn’t something I do just for a resolution, I have these for when I’m feeling sad, anxious, or mad – but it definitely worked during my weight loss challenges. I put together for myself little note card booklets with uplifting, inspiring, and motivating quotes that I look through when I feel down! This helps when you don’t have someone else there to motivate you, and it helps to clear your head of the negative energy we put on ourselves!

3. Recruit A Friend

If there is someone you know that you think would want to make the resolution with you, that will help you! Especially if you’re doing something like losing weight, eating healthier, quitting smoking, etc. It’s great to have someone go through the struggle with you, so you don’t feel alone! It’s also great to have someone who can be constant motivation for you!

I hope these can help you accomplish any goal you have set for yourself and this New Year! Just keep reminding yourself why you set the goal in the first place, and that can be such a great motivation in itself!

New Year’s Resolutions You Should Make

It’s time to ring in a new year! But this year, instead of making a resolution we both know you won’t keep, try something different. The suggestions I have for you below are all easy and will definitely make you feel better, unlike the letdown that comes with knowing you couldn’t keep a resolution, such as cutting out junk food altogether, or getting to the gym for an hour each day!

1. Stress Less

If I had a penny for every time someone said they were stressed out, I could afford my own tropical vacation. Make a list of every stressor, then make another list of ways to combat it. It could be going for a walk, writing in a journal, calling a friend, dancing to music, etc. Whenever you find yourself getting too caught up in your worries, take a deep breath and bring yourself back to the present moment.

2. Drink More

No, not at parties! I’m talking about water! Did you know the daily drinking water requirement per person is 2-4 liters? Getting enough water has numerous benefits, including making you less tired during the day and giving you more energy. So if one of your personal New Year resolutions is to lose weight, drinking a glass or two of water instead of eating when you feel hungry can help you achieve that.

3. Be Encouraging…

And be vocal about it! It’s a popular theory that the more we vocalize encouraging words to others, the higher feeling of endorphins we feel ourselves, thus making us feel better. This year, make it a point to congratulate your friends when they snag a great job, get a promotion, or just conquer a big day. They’ll feel great and you’ll feel great in return! It’s a win-win!

4. Say ‘Yes’ Instead of No

I once told a person I admired that I wanted the same amazing opportunities she had. Her answer? “Just say yes to everything!” The advice has given me amazing experiences! This year, even though it might be easier to stay in under the comfort of your house in front of the TV, whenever someone invites you out, say yes! You never know what the excursion will lead you to.

I hope you all are enjoying what 2013 has brought to you so far. I do not know if any of you actually make a list of resolutions, but I try to make a habit out of writing one every year that is full of goals and hopes that I am determined to accomplish during the year. Life is busy enough as a college student and resolutions are not always easy to abide by. Like 80% of the world, I fall short on all or most of these goals every year. So I have compiled a list of advice for all of us who are determined to complete this year’s resolutions.

1. Reminders

Look at yourself now. Then think of what you will feel like when you accomplish your goal.  You will feel pretty great, right? Hold on to that feeling and remind yourself of it every time that little voice tells you it is not worth it.

2. Plan

Sit down with a calendar, one that you put every important date on and that you will see every day. Make a timeline using this calendar to make check points and accomplishment dates for your goals. Your resolutions will go nowhere if you do not see a way to cross the finish line.

3. Motivational Notes

As corny as you may find this, put sticky notes all over your house, car, or anywhere to remind you that you can do it. It is important to maintain encouraged. We have to find encouragement within ourselves, and not just from those around us.
