Mother’s Day is May 10th, do you know what you’re getting your mom?

Rest assured, even if you’re on a tight budget – which, let’s face it, all college students are – there are still some creative do-it-yourself Mother’s Day gifts that you can make to show your mom, or the mother figure in your life, just how much you love and appreciate her.

1. Decorative Candle Holders

It may be easy to just go to the store and buy some candles, but why not personalize some basic candles to add that special touch? Head to a nearby dollar or craft supplies store to pick up a few materials, then head home to create this shimmery delight for your mom. She will be sure to love it!

2. Chocolate Covered Strawberries

What mom doesn’t love chocolate? Everyone loves a little sweet treat every now and then, and this one doesn’t cost a fortune. Pick up some strawberries, chocolate chips, and make sure you have vegetable oil on hand. You can even add sprinkles, as demonstrated in the video. These can either be a decadent dessert, or a tasty side to a home-cooked breakfast made by you!

3. Photo Collage

If you have family photo albums (not the kind that are online), snag a few of your favorites of you and your mom and make copies. You can get a cheap picture frame at the dollar store for this idea. In this tutorial, ribbon is used in place of the traditional glass front, but you can do whichever one you think your mom would love more.

4. Sharpie Mug

I have done this for my mom and she absolutely loved it. For this project, all you’ll need are oil-based Sharpies, which you can find in a bunch of different colors at a craft store for under $10, and a plain mug (or plate, flower pot, etc.) from the dollar store. You can write lyrics to her favorite song, an inside joke between you two, a personal message, or draw a cute design.

5. Scented Bath Salts

Your mom deserves to take a break every now and then just to relax and rejuvenate. Make her some sweet-scented bath salts so she can enjoy a nice hot bath! The ingredients used for this DIY are things you’ll probably already have in your kitchen. If you know her favorite smell, pick it up as an essential oil at a craft store. Not sure what she’ll like? You can’t go wrong with vanilla or lavender!

The most important thing is to make your mom feel special and that she is truly appreciated for all that she does. If you are planning to make something for your mom this year, share what it is in a comment below!

Happy Mother’s Day!

It has been another year and now another Mother’s Day is approaching! Do you know what you’re getting your mom (or mother figure in your life) yet? Flowers and chocolate work well, but why not try something different this year?

Check out this list of budget-friendly ideas:

1. Music

If you know her favorite songs, compile them all together for her to bring along wherever she goes (a CD, on her iPod, or whatever). Not sure what she’ll like? Make a list of some songs that make you think about her – that remind you of good times spent together, or even just a playlist of songs you think she will like. It’s the thought that counts!

2. Collage

Make a collage of all your own photos of the two of you together over the years, or just your favorite moments as a family. You can even put it in a fancy frame to spiff it up!

3. Handwritten Letter

Not creative with photo art? Put your heart to words. Write a list of all the reasons she means a lot to you, ways she’s helped you over the years, or your favorite memories. Also, fight the urge to type it up. It may be quicker and less of a strain on your hand, but handwritten shows real effort and adds a personal touch.

4. Pampering

Not all spa services cost an arm and a leg. Either a chair massage or a simple pedicure – moms like to be taken care of and feel pretty too! This is a great way to remind her she isn’t just a mom, she’s a woman too!

5. Her Guilty Pleasure

It can be as simple as a card, a hug, and her favorite candy! Surprisingly, my mom pointed out a coloring book (of all things) she wanted. Of course it’s not the only thing I’ll get for her, but the point is, all moms have things they do or indulge in to relax. What does your mom do? Let her know you pay attention by picking her up that special something!

No matter what you choose, the goal is to make your mom feel appreciated. Put a little thought and time into your gift, and you can’t go wrong!

Happy Mother’s Day!

Mother’s Day is coming! Do you know what you’re getting your mom? Now would be a good time to recall all those conversations you’ve had with her about what she likes and doesn’t like. Just in case you’re clueless, here are five affordable gift ideas any mom would be happy to receive.

1. Jewelry

All women love jewelry, but what will make your gift unique? If you can, take a look in her jewelry box, or if you see her before Mother’s Day, take note of what kind of earrings she wears. You can never go wrong with having her piece monogrammed with either her initials, the initials of you and your siblings, or just a sweet message. Personalizing is the touch that shows you put in the extra effort.

2. iPhone Case

If your mom is like mine and she’s just now joining the world of iPhone users, she might be scrambling for a decent-looking iPhone case. Again, personalization is key. Look for a case with a scene of her favorite location (ex. the beach), a quote from her favorite book, or one with her initials.

3. Books

For the literary lover, you can never go wrong with a book or even a year’s subscription to their favorite magazine. A lot of mom’s revel in reading magazines with a lot of delicious recipes or decorating tips, such as Real Simple or Food, or magazines with beautiful photography, such as National Geographic Traveler. If your mom has converted to Kindle, why not get her a cover?

. Dining & Cooking

Is your mom always in the kitchen whipping up delicious dinners and mouthwatering desserts? Consider adding something unique and fun to her kitchen space with a decal for her mixer, a picturesque cutting board, or printed dishtowels.

5. Gift Gard

Pick up a gift certificate to her favorite store, her favorite website, or a spa in town where she can be pampered one afternoon.

Still not sure what to get? Another good way to get a sense of what your mom likes is by checking out her Pinterest or Amazon account. What she pins or adds to her wish list is basically her telling you what she wants – so take a hint!

Good luck!
