Inexplicably, reading during the summer break seems so much more appealing than reading while classes are in session. Perhaps it’s because it’s not forced homework upon us, or perhaps because it brings us back to our elementary school days when we had a summer reading list. Either way, reading is one of my favorite past times during the Summer and these are my favorite summer reads this year that you should check into:

1. Looking For Alaska by John Green

I read this book a few years back, but I keep coming back to it. It’s a sad book but a great read! It is a young adult fiction about a guy, Miles Halter, who goes to a boarding school where he meets Alaska and how she has a huge impact on his life. Miles is obsessed with the final words of famous people. His last saying was by Francois Rabelais, “I go to seek a great perhaps.” He seeks his own “great perhaps” while attending Culver Creek and meeting Alaska.

2. The Fault in Our Stars by John Green

This book is written by the same author as my first recommendation. It seems to be very popular this year. It is narrated by Hazel, a 16 year old cancer patient, who attends a support group and meets and falls in love with 17 year old Augustus. It is also a sad book so prepare to shed a few tears, but it’s a definite must-read that will make you appreciate life more.

3. My Sister’s Keeper by Jodi Picoult

Yet another very sad book, but the best books are those that bring out emotions in you! Anna helps her older sister, Kate, deal with leukemia through her countless surgeries, shots, and transfusions, but is it morally correct to do whatever it takes to save a child’s life, even if that means infringing upon the rights of another? There has been a movie made based on this book, but the ending is completely different in the book than the movie and as usual the book is much better than the movie version!

4. Never Eat Alone: And Other Secrets to Success, One Relationship at a Time by Keith Ferrazzi

This is sort of a self-help book on how to be successful and network. The secret to success is by reaching out to other people. It’s a perfect book for a college student because it is filled with helpful tips on how to reach your goals and keeping important relationships alive.

5. My Horizontal Life: A Collection of One-Night Stands by Chelsea Handler

If you think Chelsea Handler is hilarious on her late-night show, you’ll love her books even more! This is one of my faves from her. It’s a book of stories about Chelsea’s one-night stands; it’s sharp, funny and light.
