It’s so easy to get really excited for Halloween, and totally not pay attention to the kind of candy you’re consuming. (Believe me, been there!) To save you from a belly ache and a tip on the scale, I wanted to put together a list of do’s and don’ts for Halloween candy, so that you can have the sweets without regret!

Run Away From….

1. Candy Corn

Don’t let the name fool you. This kind of corn has no nutrients for you. Not only is it full of sugar, but the more you eat it, the more you will crave it.

2. Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup

Yes, I’m sorry, this delicious treat has to go on the run away list. The combination of peanut butter, chocolate and sugar just simply is not good for you. And seriously, who has ever eaten a Reece’s without wanting twenty more!

3. Twizzlers

These ropes of goodness are a common misconception. Everyone thinks because there is no saturated fat that they are okay to eat. However, Twizzlers don’t have any of the good stuff, like protein or fiber. So, pretty much, you’re just eating red ropes of sugar.

 Stuff You Should Go For…

4. Peanut M&M’s

These are a perfect alternative to Reece’s! Unlike those sugary ropes, these M&M’s have peanuts which is full of protein. And, if you don’t like peanuts, try the pretzel M&M’s! This will be a great sugar fix, and as a bonus you get some nutrients that your body will love!
5. York Peppermint Patty

These are great because they are super low in fat and don’t have near as much sugar as most other candies! You get a little chocolate, and a little mint which solves your sugar dilemma and gives your breath that minty coolness everyone loves!

6. Sugar-Free Lifesavers

These are probably the most obvious, but it’s because you can eat them a lot more than any other candy! Lifesavers are delicious and they have so many flavors that anyone can find something satisfying!

Don’t be tricked this Halloween, be treated. The most important thing about Halloween is to have fun, so set yourself up for success and carry along with you healthy alternative candies and you won’t skip a beat! Happy Halloween, everyone!

It’s mid-October! Can you smell the crisp air? Can you hear the leaves crunching underneath your feet? Are all the stores packed with Halloween decorations, costumes, and candies? Halloween will be here sooner than you know it! Are you ready? Let’s find out…

1. Are You In The Mood?

Amp up for Halloween by watching scary movies, going on hay rides, finding your way out of a corn maze, pumpkin carving, apple picking, and haunted houses! Decorating your college living space will definitely get you and others in the spirit. There is plenty to do – so get started!

2. What Are You Doing?

Halloween is on a Wednesday this year, but don’t let that stop you from having fun! Whatever it is you plan on doing, make it festive! Passing out candy to trick-or-treaters can be fun if you dress up, play spooky music, hand out good treats, and maybe throw a few spooks out along the way to the older kids. Or, throw a Halloween Party with tons of festive treats, a costume contest, or a murder mystery.

3. Do You Have A Costume?

Face it – we may be too old to still go trick-or-treating, but we will never be too old to stop dressing up. You can even create your own costume if you’re feeling crafty – don’t feel limited to choose what the stores offer. Think of an idea first, and then find pieces to pull it all together. If you’re in a relationship, it is cute to match costumes like Peanut Butter & Jelly, Ketchup & Mustard, etc. Even a group of friends can pull off that same idea by all going in group costumes – The Avengers, The Jersey Shore, Crayons, etc. Get creative!

4. Do You Believe In Ghosts?

It is classic to tell or listen to ghost stories around this time of year. But what about experiencing it for yourself? Search for local hauntings around your college campus and go ghost hunting with a bunch of friends! Make an event out of it – take pictures, record noises, and learn the history of what happened there. Be careful – you never know what you might find!

What do you do to get ready for Halloween? What will you be doing this year?

The Most Popular Costumes this Halloween

Every year in October, or sooner if you like to plan ahead, college students start making Halloween plans. We find out from our friends what they are doing, think about who we want to spend Halloween night with, and most importantly, what our costume will be.

The costume used to be the most important part to me. (How else would I have come up with the idea to be an Aerosmith groupie one year?) However, because I work with kids, I get enough of a Halloween fix at work seeing what their costumes are. Still, it never stops being entertaining to peruse the costume websites to see what is most popular that year.

First, you have Lady Gaga. Lady Gaga is probably the most fun you can have with a costume because the pop star is famous for her head-turning outfits. To make sure others actually recognize who you’re supposed to be, grab a wig in a bold color, some glittery eyelashes, and sky high heels. Just don’t run out and slap some meat on your body, á la Lady Gaga at the VMA’s last year.

Since yet another Pirates of the Caribbean movie has been released, it seems there is no shortage of pirate costumes. For the guys, if you can look as good as Johnny Depp then I’ve got no problem with yet another pirate, but girls, the slutty pirate costume is just a little bit unoriginal. When you see a hundred other slutty pirates walking the city streets Halloween night, you’ll thank me for telling you to try again!

It seems that it wasn’t until the Spiderman movies came out that flaunting your crush on a comic book superhero was considered “cool.” Well that tradition has carried over and now there is bound to be no shortage of superheroes. From Batman and the Green Lantern, to Spiderman and Wolverine, it might just be that superheroes are the staple for college guys. For women, we get to be slinky and sexy without being slutty.

Whatever you choose to be, have fun with it! The whole point of Halloween is that we get to dress up as something we aren’t. So be original and get creative because it’s going to be another whole year before we get to do this again.
