It has been another year and now another Mother’s Day is approaching! Do you know what you’re getting your mom (or mother figure in your life) yet? Flowers and chocolate work well, but why not try something different this year?

Check out this list of budget-friendly ideas:

1. Music

If you know her favorite songs, compile them all together for her to bring along wherever she goes (a CD, on her iPod, or whatever). Not sure what she’ll like? Make a list of some songs that make you think about her – that remind you of good times spent together, or even just a playlist of songs you think she will like. It’s the thought that counts!

2. Collage

Make a collage of all your own photos of the two of you together over the years, or just your favorite moments as a family. You can even put it in a fancy frame to spiff it up!

3. Handwritten Letter

Not creative with photo art? Put your heart to words. Write a list of all the reasons she means a lot to you, ways she’s helped you over the years, or your favorite memories. Also, fight the urge to type it up. It may be quicker and less of a strain on your hand, but handwritten shows real effort and adds a personal touch.

4. Pampering

Not all spa services cost an arm and a leg. Either a chair massage or a simple pedicure – moms like to be taken care of and feel pretty too! This is a great way to remind her she isn’t just a mom, she’s a woman too!

5. Her Guilty Pleasure

It can be as simple as a card, a hug, and her favorite candy! Surprisingly, my mom pointed out a coloring book (of all things) she wanted. Of course it’s not the only thing I’ll get for her, but the point is, all moms have things they do or indulge in to relax. What does your mom do? Let her know you pay attention by picking her up that special something!

No matter what you choose, the goal is to make your mom feel appreciated. Put a little thought and time into your gift, and you can’t go wrong!

Happy Mother’s Day!

Last minute Christmas shopping can be stressful, but to save time and money, maybe consider a few homemade DIY gifts that will really make a meaningful holiday gift.

1. Candles

Homemade candles not only smell delicious, they are also a creative addition to any room in your house. You can find candle making kits at almost any craft shop, or you can use this recipe. You can even buy some scented oils to add to your candles. Cinnamon, pine, or even peppermint are the perfect holiday scents!

2. Ornaments

A personalized touch to the tree is never a bad thing. You can make popsicle reindeer, spoon Santas and Mrs. Clauses, or my favorite, “Swirl-a-balls.” You can find all the supplies to make these inexpensive ornaments at a craft store. Homemade ornaments might be small gifts, but who doesn’t love something homemade?

3. Jewelry

Again, all the supplies you need to make a bracelet, necklace, or even a regular keychain can be found at a craft store. Find out your friend’s or a family member’s favorite color and you can find the corresponding beads to match! I like picking out funky beads with random shapes, animal faces, or even letters for initials. You can also buy beads to spell out a special phrase or inside joke. You also don’t have to buy regular old fishing line for jewelry – use cord, rope, or hemp!

4. Photo Collage

Photo collages are a great way to show someone how much you appreciate them. Pick out your favorite photos together and you can either place them in a fancy frame with pre-cut shapes, or simply pick out the frame and add your own personal touches using scrapbook paper, pieces of dried flowers, or even twigs from the woods. Anything you add is sure to personalize it!

5. Dessert

Mmmm, something delicious to nibble on around the fire or at parties? How could a person say no? Do a bit of digging to find out their favorite guilty pleasure and surprise them with it! If you can’t figure out what to make, fudge and peppermint bark never disappoint!

If you are on a budget this holiday season, maybe the best solution to holiday gifts this year is to do them yourself (DIY) and get creative! The best gifts aren’t about how much you’ve spent, but about how much thought and dedication you put into them. To start you off with some festive suggestions, here are three DIY gift ideas:

1. Mason Jars

Mason jar gifts have been very trendy this past year. All you need is some mason jars, decorative ribbon, and a bag of marshmallows and a box of hot chocolate mix that you can typically all find at the dollar store. Wash and dry the jars, then pour in a packet of the hot chocolate mix and fill it with the marshmallows and seal it. Use the ribbon to tie a bow, and you can even add a decorative card stock sign tag to make it extra festive! If you really want to get creative, you can add peppermint candy at the very top after filling it with marshmallows.

2. Personalized Mugs

Mugs are the greatest gifts you can give anyone since you can never have too many! For the holiday season, you can gift personalized mugs for your parents, family, or friends. They’ll absolutely love it because it was thoughtful and creative gift! Just look for a holiday styled or plain mug at the dollar store and some acrylic paint pens to draw or write whatever you can think of! Draw out the design on some scratch paper first if you need to think it out. You could also add some holiday candy like peppermints, M&M’s, or Andes mints for a bonus!

3. “S’more Love”

Send S’more love your friends and family’s way with this fun gift idea! Make them a personalized mini-s’mores kit that they can all enjoy. Cut out even squares of cellophane wrap and place a stack of graham crackers in the center, followed by some Hershey’s chocolate, and then marshmallows. Wrap the s’more with a ribbon and a holiday gift tag for added personal touch.

Thank You Gifts For Abroad

Whether you are planning to stay with a host family, in a hostel, or with friends, it is a good idea to always have some small trinkets to give as gifts to whomever shows you a little hospitality while you are abroad. Not only will you be presenting yourself in the best light, you will also be presenting your country positively, which is something a lot of travelers don’t think about.

Rest assured buying thank you gifts doesn’t have to break the bank. There are many inexpensive things you can pick up that will be sure to satisfy and are easy to travel with!

1. Magnets

Magnets make great gifts because they add life to a kitchen! Plus, anyone who comes over to their house for a meal will most likely ask about them and that makes it a gateway to a great conversation about how a wonderful traveling student gave it to them as a little thank you.

2. Postcards

I have pen pals from Africa, Spain, and even just a few states in the U.S. and postcards are one of my favorite little gifts to get. I love having something to pin up on the refrigerator, around my room, or on my bureau mirror, and your kind friends, hostel works, or host family will too!

3. Homemade Goods

Anything home-made or handmade from your state is always a great gift. People love supporting local businesses and areas. Some ideas could be: jewelry, candles, jams, or chocolate. If there is a local market in your town on weekends, chances are it is a jackpot for inexpensive goodies like these.

4. Keychains

Add a little flair to your someone’s key ring with a unique keychain with their name or a cool design on it. Each time they reach for their keys, they will think of you.

Still in doubt? Think about what you would like to get as a gift from someone and go with that. As long as you put some thought into it, you can’t go wrong. Mostly it’s the idea of being appreciative to those who welcome you into their space for your extended travels. Show them they have made a difference!
