Why Attending Your School’s Sports Events Benefits You AND The Team

College athletics, particularly basketball, are awesome. The raw thrill of competition, the simple power of the crowd when you are packed in like sardines, rocking the bleachers to swished three-pointers or a sweet dunk: It is better than most parties, I must say.

Attending athletic events doesn’t only benefit you though. Studies have shown that teams play better when more people from their school come out to watch them. Ever heard of home field advantage? The cheering of the crowd positively influences the players on your team to allow them to attain that peak performance level. But home field advantage doesn’t exist unless you get out there and start cheering your heart out.

Going to these games are a win-win for both you and the athletes. You get to have a great time, while the athletes can feed off your energy in the crowd. You don’t only have to go the big sports though (men’s basketball, football, etc). To be honest, sometimes the men’s and women’s volleyball games are way more fun than the basketball games. And just think about how much fun basketball games are…

There’s only one problem. How do you know where and when these awesome sporting events occur? Well, the easy solution is to look on your school’s athletics website. Schedules for every single team, male and female, are posted there. If your school sends out an email about the sports for the week, read that email and your school newspaper’s sports section likely has the schedule, as well. But there is the still the grapevine (are we still calling it that?), posters, and did I mention the thing about the internet?

So now you have your plans for the next Saturday. Your school is playing some other school, and they need your support TO DESTROY THAT VICIOUS, EVIL OTHER SCHOOL. It may be heart wrenching if you lose, and exalting if you win, but there is no greater feeling than being the person freaking out on the Jumbotron.
