Remember last year’s top 10 songs? What was once OneRepublic and Bruno Mars has turned into Carly Rae Jepsen and One Direction. We’ve come a long way from music in 2011 – let’s look back on what the top 10 songs were this year (in no particular order).
1. Somebody That I Used to Know – Gotye
It may have a weird music video, but the lyrics resonate with everyone. Also falls under “Most Overplayed Song of 2012.”
2. Call Me Maybe – Carly Rae Jepsen
She went from being a waitress and performing at bars and cafes to having a hit song with more than 362 million views on YouTube.
3. Some Nights – Fun.
A unique sound and fresh lyrics. One of the best ballads ever.
4. What Makes You Beautiful – One Direction
One Direction will never fill the void boy bands Backstreet Boys and N’Sync left us with, but their first hit has certainly come close. Danceable, a great beat, and sweet lyrics.
5. Gangnam Style – Psy
Unfortunately, I think this will be a one hit wonder, but Psy got us all up and dancing!
6. Home – Phillip Phillips
Winner of American Idol season 11, this Georgia native’s Mumford and Sons sound was a big hit with everyone.
7. As Long As You Love Me – Justin Bieber
It’s a tie between this and Boyfriend, so let’s just say they both won. Irritatingly catchy lyrics and a boy no girl (except this one) can resist.
8. Ho Hey – The Lumineers
A rustic and folkish happy little love long, “Ho Hey” has been the #1 most played track in the U.S. on Spotify.
9. Wanted – Hunter Hayes
With a little more than 21 million views on YouTube, Hunter crooned his way into the hearts of young women everywhere. Did you know he can play about 30 different instruments?
10. We Are Never Getting Back Together – Taylor Swift
Is it really a surprise to see Taylor on the list? Her chronicle of breakups and flings leaves me wondering just one thing: who will she be writing about next year?
2012 was a year full of great hits, let’s see what 2013 has in store for us!
