Graduating is the last decision we make as college students. Many people opt out of going to graduation, but then later come to regret it. Ultimately, it is everyone’s own personal decision to make. However, I would like to give you a few things to consider before you make your final decision:

1. Every Story Needs An Ending

After four (or more) long years of sitting in classrooms listening to lectures, there should be a commemoration of all that hard work. Not going to your college graduation is sort of like watching 8 seasons of your favorite show and then missing the series finale. It can leave a feeling of incompleteness. Although you may not think that now, you may later realize that you don’t feel like you finished because there never was an official ending.

2. It Matters To Someone

You may decide that you don’t need to attend your graduation and be completely fine with that decision, however you may have some loved ones who have been waiting to see you walk across that stage for years. More often than not, these loved ones are parents who are extremely proud of their little graduates (and if they paid your tuition, they have quite the leverage over you when it comes to attending the ceremony).

3. Diploma

In many universities the “diplomas” handed out during graduation are not the real thing and students have to wait a few months to receive their actual diplomas in the mail. However, in some schools, students actually receive their real diplomas up on stage during the ceremony. Before you decide not to go to your ceremony, find out if your school is one of these universities.

4. Say Goodbye

Although you may have made some good friends during your time in school and have every intention of keeping in touch with your alumni, chances are you may never see them again. Things happen; life happens. Therefore, this could be your last chance to see all of these people one last time. And what better way to say good-bye than at a very joyous ceremony?

Again, ultimately the decision is yours. Just make sure you’re happy with your decision so that you don’t look back at it later in life with regret. And for those of you graduating soon, I would like to congratulate you all and wish you the best of luck!
