Halloween is finally here. Whether you’re a fan or not it’s the season of yummy candy and cute costumes! Once again we decided to do a taste test around the office to see what candy we like.

We tested A-gummy worms, B-sour gummies, C-cola gummies, D-fruity gummies, and E-gummy bears.

Gummy Candy Voting

We also asked our Facebook fans to help us out. Our fans liked sour candy the best with gummy bears coming in a close second. So what did our office think? Sour candy by a wide margin!

Candy Winner

There you have it, the sour candy has proven to be the favorite over the classic gummy bears. Who knew? I think if chocolate was a choice it would win hands down, no?

So hopefully this motivates you to get in the Halloween spirit, if not at least to buy some yummy candy!

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

Andy’s Top 4 “College-y” Blogs – (and oh, one more, I think)

First we need to say goodbye to an Octopus.

This was supposed to be a post about the best “college-y” blogs out there, but this weeks tragedy takes precedence – Paul the psychic Octopus died this week at the age of 2 1/2 http://www.sbnation.com/2010/10/26/1775245/paul-the-octopus-dies-world-cup-psychic-mollusk. I’m not really sure what the average age is for an Octopus of this kind, but my colleague Briana here next to me says it should be “old”. In that case, Paul, just like Fatso the keyboard cat, you died too young.

Moving on, here are some college blogs:

BroBible.com – A site by East coast fratters for the same, which refers to the “Bro” as a positive, energetic force in collegiate and working society. Depending on where you are in the country you might disagree with their characterization of a “Bro” (central to understanding the site’s content), so take the blog with a grain of salt.

CollegeCandy.com – The feminine quasi-response to the BroBible. A little less chauvinistic and bold, but still edgy.

Deadspin.com – The first of the popular sports blogs.  Deadspin ignited a debate a few years ago among the sports journalism establishment and won a lot of support from the up and coming sports fans.

Hypem.com – Where the cool kids go to get their new music. HypeM aggregates content from a number of different blogs in an organized, practical fashion, so you can stream songs all day long!

TMZ – I don’t know much about this site. I think it’s a gossip site. I saw a guy reading it in religion class once.

What blogs do you read?

The Ultimate Rivalry: Starbucks vs. Dunkin’ Donuts

Written by BookRenter Mike

Although I go to school at the University of Virginia, I’m a California kid, born and raised about an hour outside of San Francisco. As part of my education, I have come to notice a certain rivalry between the East Coast and the West Coast, an argument in which nobody-wins but everybody is right. One of the most interesting parts of this rivalry is the preference that people have for coffee, or more specifically, whether Dunkin’ Donuts or Starbucks is better.

The Corner district at UVA is where every student goes to grab a bite to eat or enjoy the local bar scene but also to enjoy a good cup of coffee. Starbucks has been around ever since I came here 3.5 years ago but recently a new Dunkin’ Donuts just opened up on the corner. You would have thought the circus was coming to town with all of the hoopla surrounding the opening.

So my question: What do you think is the better, Dunkin’ Donuts or Starbucks? I asked some local students what they thought and here are my favorite responses:

“No doubt its Dunkin’ Donuts, I mean, how can you beat the combination of delicious donuts and coffee? Starbucks is OK buts it’s a little too trendy for my taste, I like the atmosphere much better at Dunkin” – John B. 3rd Year, Boston MA

“I would have to say Starbucks just because from a coffee standpoint, it tastes a lot better than what they serve over at Dunkin. Also, the lines are always much shorter at Starbucks because their workers are quick and much faster at bringing out orders” – Joe U, 4th Year, Rye NY

“It’s a tough call but I’m from Seattle and there’s no way I can say that Dunkin is better than Starbucks, I would be shot upon coming home for Thanksgiving break. But if I wasn’t from Seattle? Definitely Dunkin, nothing beats those chocolate donuts after bars.” Henry M, 2nd Year, Seattle WA

It definitely seems pretty split but I have to give the slight edge to Dunkin Donuts, at least at UVA. What about you guys who go to school on the West Coast? Chime in and leave a comment, and just maybe Starbucks can come back and win the Coffee Challenge.

Weekly Coffee Winner!

Congratulations Alejandra, you are this week’s $10 coffee gift card winner!

“Good times. I totally used a shelf and pictures to spruce up my top bunk last year. It was so helpful but the shelf kept getting overloaded with things I would bring up there and not bring down.  Another cheap thing to do if you’re artistic in any fashion is to put some white butcher paper on the wall, and paint whatever your heart desires. It always ends up looking beautiful.”
